Bimblebox is an 8,000 hectare Desert Upland nature refuge in Central Queensland. Paola Cassoni, who helped create it and helps manage it, is coming to visit Turnstyle to show some photos of the land and wildlife, and give us the update on the mission to protect it from Waratah Coal’s current mining proposal.

Reasons to come:

  • Paola is an inspiration. She and her partner grow a sizeable quantity of vegetables in Outback Queensland, and she has some great stories to share.
  • There will be some food there (also to share), and time for questions / mingling.
  • On September 26, 2011, Waratah Coal finally released the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for its ‘China First’ mine over the Bimblebox area. The EIS says the plan is for an open-cut mine that would destroy more than half of Bimblebox Nature Refuge, and for long-wall mining under the other half, resulting in subsidence and major interference with hydrology.
  • This is a significant case because it will set a precedent for other nature refuges subject to mining. The Federal Government put in a fair amount of money to help buy and create Bimblebox in the first place, but that all looks set to go to waste if the State Government of Queensland continues its support for mining on nature refuges.
